Children of Divorce Recovery
Each year since the mid-70’s, more than 1 million children have experienced a family divorce. It is projected that nearly half of all the babies born today will spend some time in a one-parent family which occurred as a result of single parenthood or divorce. Children whose parents divorce frequently feel angry, confused, and depressed.
We strongly encourage divorcing parents to obtain training in handling their divorce in such a way that their children are impacted as minimally as possible. We also know that it is helpful for children to interact with other children who are experiencing similar feelings. Positive contact with peers can help children feel less isolated and help to “normalize” their experience.
Our recovery group for “Children of Divorce” meets weekly and is open to children between the ages of 6 and 11. Pre-screening is required.
Cooperative Parenting Program
One of the primary factors in a child's adjustment to divorce is the quality of the parent's post divorce relationship. Cooperative Parenting & Divorce is a video based educational program created to give divorced parents the skills to become effective co-parents for the sake of their children. Both the program and the workbook are intended to help divorcing and divorced parents shield their children from parental conflict and loyalty binds.
The program is offered in two formats, group and co-parent. Parents may participate voluntarily in an 8 week group or they may be required by the courts to participate in the co-parent format.
Mothering Children of Divorce
This 11-week program is designed to help mothers help their children adjust to divorce. It is not a program to help moms adjust, although if the children are coping well, the parents’ adjustment will be made easier.
This program is designed to:
1)Reduce the stress level in the home;
2)Allow mothers to feel closer to their children;
3)Get the children to talk and open up more;
4)Obtain better behavior from children;
5)Stop feeling “out of control;” and
6)Reduce the amount of fighting.
The program is not designed to achieve such unrealistic expectations as: 1) getting the father to be a more responsible parent; 2) getting other people to make children change; or 3) getting the children to keep the house clean.
This program is based on solid research as to its effectiveness. For further information, call 770/898-1155.
