What is an EAP?
An Employee Assistance Program (“EAP”) is a company-sponsored benefit that many employers provide to their employees to help them find ways to prevent or solve personal problems. It provides employees with free access to counseling services.
At any one time, 10% of employees in a company experience personal problems -- problems severe enough to result in a decline in an employee's performance. The EAP uses specialized methods of counseling, consulting and case management to address personal problems.
How is EAP Counseling Different From Regular Counseling?
EAP counseling is generally limited in scope. It is focused on assessing the problem, and determining the best course of action. Alternatives are discussed with the client, and the client is then free to choose the route he/she wishes to take.
Employers may purchase a variety of EAP models: They range from telephone or on-line assessment (generally about 3 sessions) to up to 15 face-to-face counseling sessions. The EAP is not designed to provide long-term therapy, but is a place to get started when problems seem to be overwhelming, and employees aren’t sure where to turn.
Is the EAP Confidential?
Yes. The employer pays for the program with a flat fee, and the EAP is then able to provide all services to the employee without any claim forms or without billing the company for individual cases. Records are protected by law, and no one is given any information about your visit without your permission.
Is the EAP Available to My Family?
In most cases, EAP services through your company are available to your family. They may contact the EAP directly, and they do not have to go through the Company or you.
Why Should I Use the EAP?
Most EAPs are designed to deal with a wide range of human problems. These might include stress, depression, marital or family problems, work-related issues, alcohol or drug problems, or even financial concerns. When faced with serious problems, many people don’t know where to turn. An EAP counselor is an objective listener with vast information about resources related to almost any problem with which individuals and families are struggling.
What are the EAP Counselor’s Credentials?
Most EAPs require their counselors to have a minimum of a master’s degree in one of the human services fields, such as counseling, social work or psychology. Counselors must be licensed by the state in which they practice. At Person to Person Consulting, counselors must also have significant experience in the field in which they practice.
How Do I Contact the EAP?
If your company provides EAP services, you will have access to a phone number through which you may access the EAP. If you don’t already have the number, your Human Resources Director should be able to provide it.
If Person to Person Consulting is your EAP, you may contact us at 770/898-1155.
